London, August 22nd, 2024 - Pangea Bio, a company developing transformative medicines for neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, has been awarded a grant of £390k by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, as part of the Biomedical Catalyst. The grant will fund preclinical studies by Pangea investigating the neuroprotective therapeutic potential of novel treatments for eye diseases, including glaucoma.
Glaucoma is caused by dysfunctional eye drainage leading to fluid build-up, increasing intraocular pressure (IOP), which causes optic nerve damage and vision loss. While current treatments primarily target IOP reduction, the rates of visual disability and blindness remain substantial, with a critical unmet medical need for novel therapies to protect against vision loss in an IOP-independent manner.
Pangea is investigating whether its neuroprotective therapeutic can address this problem by protecting against optic neuropathy, ultimately reducing vision loss and improving quality-of-life. The Innovate UK grant will help to address these questions and provide what could be a potentially transformative glaucoma treatment.
